Especially if you intend to use them on your skin, or in food/drink recipes. Here are a few things to look for when deciding on a brand to purchase your ritual oils from:

1: Look for a company that includes the Scientific Latin plant names. This helps describe both the “genus” and “species” of plants as there are several variations. Lavender for example has over 25 known variants - each one having different properties and values in rituals.

2: Look for a company that has source farms that do not use chemical pesticides on their plants. It takes 27 square feet of lavender plants to make one 15-ml bottle of lavender oil, imagine how concentrated that oil is and how much of that chemical would reach your body if it were present. 3: Look for a company that uses sustainable farming practices. The last thing we want is for the oils used in our rituals to bring harm to the earth or to the communities producing them. As I share oils in this thread, I will use these symbols to help differentiate between them. I may add more symbols as I go, but these cover the basics thus far.

Warnings: - Not intended for ingestion (may be poisonous if ingested) - photoreactive (avoid direct sunlight 24hrs after application) always check labels and with a physician before using oils

Starter Oils - for beginners and everyday use They are very versatile and some of the less expensive oils to get started with. These four can be the best go tos for protection and healing Peppermint (Mentha Piperita)-Peppermint has a refreshing and energizing scent. It can be used in foods or teas as well as inhaled via a diffuser or steam treatment to open airways and clear the mind. It is one of my favorite oils to use when cleansing a room as it invites positive energies, invokes feelings of growth, and improves focus. Element: Earth, Air, Fire Zodiac: Aries, Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius Deities: Artemis, Hecate, Cernunnos

Lemon (citrus limin)-Lemon oil is cheerful and was historically used for bringing luck. It is a great mood enhancer and helps to lift spirits and bring joy into space. For this reason, Lemon is a great addition to any natural cleanser. It can bring a lemony fresh clean scent while performing mundane cleaning, or it can be added to moon water to clean and purify crystals and other tools. While it can be used topically and is included in body oils for many rituals, it can cause burns if the application is exposed to direct sunlight within 12-24 hours of use. Lemon is also great to have in the kitchen. Use it instead of lemon juice/zest in a recipe from detoxifying lemon sun tea to the sweet lemon cake. Element: Water Zodiac: Pisces, Cancer Deities: Athena, Diana, Luna, Neptune When using essential oils topically, a little goes a very long way in regards to their therapeutic value. If two drops are called for, using three will not increase the value, but rather waste valuable oil that could be used later. Because of this, carrier oils are often used in conjunction with essential oils to dilute them and help them spread further over the skin. The charts below explain some of the qualities of the various carrier oils you can use in your own practice. Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)-Lavender oil has roots in ancient Greek, Roman, Arabic, and Egyptian traditions. It was used in WWI as an antiseptic for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Because of this, lavender is one of the best oils available for minor healing. Aromatically Lavender is often used in perfumes. It produces a calming and centering aroma that promotes relaxation, meditation, and even sleep. This oil is great added to an evening bath or to a soothing tea. Element: Air Zodiac: Gemini, Virgo, Aquarius Deities: Demeter, Cernunnos, Hecate, Saturn, Brighid (Bridgid)(edited)

Tea Tree (melaleuca alternifolia)-Tea Tree oil is one of the strongest natural healing oils available to the modern witch. Its antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties make it great for purposes of purification. It was for this reason that troops used it when traditional antiseptics ran out during WWII. While Tea Tree oil is not associated directly with any deities, it may help clear spiritual pathways. It is also often used in cleansing and protection rituals. Element: Fire Zodiac: Pisces, Capricorn, Sagittarius Deities: None

Headache Blend #1: 2 drops Lavender 1 drops Peppermint Rub the oil gently along the base of the skull from ear to ear. Close your eyes and focus first on the refreshing scent of the peppermint, opening your airways. Then on the next breath focus on the calm of the lavender flowing into your body, relaxing the tension away. Repeat for a total of 9 times.

Seasonal Allergies 1 drop Lavender 1 drop Lemon 1 drop Peppermint Inhalation: Diffuse recipe x2 inhaling deeply to relieve seasonal allergies while cleansing a room or meditating. Topical: apply the recipe to back of neck twice daily, inhaling deeply to clear the airways and support respiratory health Ingestion: combine with a teaspoon of locally sourced honey and eat raw or mixed with tea for maximum benefits of allergy relief

Bug Bites #1 1 drop Lavender This morning I woke up with a mosquito in my room, so it is time to discuss bug bites. The simplest thing to do for bug bites is to just use a single drop of Lavender neat (or without dilution). The natural properties of Lavanda Angustifolia will help to reduce information and thus also reduce itching.

Oil Set Two These four oils pair well with the starter oils and help expand the usefulness of your kit. Thyme (thymus vulgaris) Lemongrass (cymbopogon flexuosus) Rosemary (rosmarinus officinalis) Frankincense (boswellia carterii) Thyme (thymus vulgaris) Historically Thyme was used by both the Ancient Greeks and Romans for purification. It is a great choice for this purpose because it is antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial. It has also been used aromatically in rituals to invoke bravery, promote sleep, and prevent nightmares. In the kitchen, it is often used in Greek and Italian dishes. Element: Water Zodiac: Taurus, Libra Deities: Venus, Freya, Aphrodite, and Ares Lemongrass (cymbopogon flexuosus) Lemongrass has been used in the past to both reduce fevers and to ease cramping due to menstruation and poor digestion. In addition, lemongrass is perfect for personal purification as it helps to stimulate psychic awareness. Aromatically this slightly astringent oil cleanses the air and promotes communication. Element: Air Zodiac: Gemini Deities: Hermes, Faeries
